Vera Bradley Classic Women's Golf and Tennis Tournament

2010 Vera Bradley Classic Wrap-Up

2010 Vera Bradley Classic raises more than $800,000

More than 1,000 supporters, including golf and tennis players, as well as we volunteers, enjoyed a weekend of fun and competition to raise funds for breast cancer research at the 17th annual Vera Bradley Classic Golf and Tennis Tournament. This year, the three-day fundraising event raised $800,275, which topped last year’s total, all of which will go to the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center.

“We did better than expected, and it’s always such happy, happy news when Fort Wayne reconfirms its commitment to breast cancer research in such a big way,” said executive director of the Vera Bradley Foundation, Catherine Hill.

As the largest amateur women’s charity golf and tennis event in the country, 144 tennis players participated in the tournament at Wildwood Racquet Club, and 472 golfers teed off at Fort Wayne Country Club and at Sycamore Hills Golf Club.

The fundraiser kicked off the weekend with a “Cocktails on the Court” and ended with a celebration dinner where Vera Bradley Chair in Oncology Linda Malkas, Ph.D, gave an update on the cutting-edge research she and her team are working on at IU Simon Cancer Center.

Winners of the Master’s Division of the tennis Challenge tournament were Cris Gage and Joan Wilson, and Judy Koontz and Mary Brucker in the Womens’ Doubles matches. The team of Randy Disser, Holly Skekloff, Jane Schmitt and Margy Fieghner placed first in the 9-hole event, and Eileen Fisher, Maria Malone, Karen Shinney and Bety Angott came out on top in the 18-hole tournament.
