Iron diminishes immunosuppressive macrophages and enhances anti-PD-1 immunotherapy in breast cancer models

The lab of Dr. Mateusz Opyrchal, the Vera Bradley Foundation Scholar in Breast Cancer Discovery, recently had an article accepted for publication in the Journal of Experimental & Clinical Cancer Research. The study, titled "Iron diminishes immunosuppressive macrophages and enhances anti-PD-1 immunotherapy in breast cancer models,” was led by Dr. Qingfei Wang. The research explores how iron signaling regulates macrophage function, which can lead to an increased immunosuppressive microenvironment. These findings suggest that anemia in cancer is not as benign as previously considered and may require more aggressive treatment.
