Turn the Town Pink raises more than $18,000
Fort Wayne, Indiana (May 9, 2008) — Dozens of volunteers turned out to tie ribbons around trees early Friday morning throughout downtown Fort Wayne, Indiana, as the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer launched it’s annual Turn the Town Pink campaign. The Honorable Mayor Tom Henry, Lutheran Hospital CEO Joe Dorko and Vera Bradley Co-Founder Pat Miller helped kick off festivities at Headwaters Park.
“This is a very important day and a very important cause, so important in fact that for the first time in my life I wore a pink tie!” said Henry, as he encouraged the crowd gathered at the park to give all that they could to the cause.
Indeed, raising breast cancer awareness and supporting research does take teamwork. “We’re trying to encourage the whole Fort Wayne community to support the cause,” said Foundation executive director Catherine Hill. “All of the money raised goes directly to funding research at Indiana University Vera Bradley Center for Breast Cancer Research at Indiana University School of Medicine so you can feel about your $5 donation.” To date this year’s ribbon sales have already helped raise $18,000. And an estimated $310,000 has been generated over the past 10 years.
The pink ribbon is a visual reminder of what everyone can do to help raise breast cancer awareness. “This is a symbol of beauty, hope, faith and survival,” said Miller. “Hope grows one ribbon at a time. Join us because together we can change the world!”
