Elkhart, Indiana Blooming flowers – a sign of spring, a sign of hope. Now, envision more than 900 square feet of 100,000 beautiful blooms bringing life to 18 colorful, patchwork gardens. That’s the sight you’ll see at the 2011 Quilt Gardens along the Heritage Trail at Wellfield Botanic Gardens in Elkhart, Indiana. And, this year, the trail will feature a Vera Bradley-themed “Hope Blooms” quilt garden, inspired by local artist Diana Bennett’s quilt designed with multiple patterns including breast cancer awareness color Twirly Birds Pink and Very Berry Paisley.

The gardens are a part of “Hope Blooms Along the Heritage Trail,” a special partnership with the Elkhart County Convention Bureau and the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer. “The project continues to evolve and just keeps getting better and better,” says Vera Bradley Sales Consultant Patti Pine, who has taken part in the project from the beginning. “It is a true collaboration between the artist, the gardeners and all involved.”

Bennet’s quilt will be on display at local retailers through August (see schedule), and visitors will have the chance to enter to win the gorgeous tapestry. Raffle tickets are available for purchase for two dollars with all of the proceeds benefitting the Vera Bradley Foundation. The winner will be announced at the annual Taste of the Gardens all-day event with local foods and wear, a fashion show, a silent auction and more to be held Saturday, August 27, 11 am – 6 pm at the Wellfield Botanic Garden.

The garden will be planted May 17, and, along with 18-handpainted quilt murals, will be on display free Memorial Day through October 1 (or first frost).
