About Us
Courage. Compassion. Commitment. These are the words that define the fight against breast cancer. We began raising funds for breast cancer in 1994 when a dear friend lost her courageous battle with this disease and established The Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer in 1998.
We have met our first $10 million pledge and are working toward our goal of another $10 million endowment to the IU School of Medicine to support the Vera Bradley Chair in Oncology and to establish the Vera Bradley Center for Breast Cancer Research (See all Sources of Income).
The new Vera Bradley Center for Breast Cancer Research allows the Vera Bradley Chair in Oncology, Dr. Linda Malkas, and her team to focus on a revolutionary biomarker technology that reveals crucial genetic information. This data could lead to earlier breast cancer diagnosis and more effective treatments and therapies.
“I’ve been driving full force,” she said, “trying to come up with a true detector to tell whether people have cancer or not... Currently, patients are often told to come back in six months when it’s easier to tell if their tumors are malignant or not. Six months is a long time to wait for something like that.”
